How to organize your closet color order and be able to find your favorite clothes in a snap.

If you’re looking for a way to streamline the look of your closet, setting up a closet color order for your hanging clothes is a simple, free way to organize your clothes.

Over the past few years I’ve experimented with color coordinating my closet.

While it does take a little extra effort to hang your clothes according to a closet color order, it ends up saving a lot of time in the long run.
Color Coordinated Closet – How To
If you’ve decided you want to color coordinate your clothes, start by coming up with a color order that you’ll use in your closet.
Closet Color Order
The most popular order, that’s easy to remember, is ROYGBIV.

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet.

Going from left to right, hang your clothes according to the order of colors you’d see in a rainbow.

The results are so pretty!

Where Do You Hang White, Black, Gray, Brown Clothes?
I like to hang my black clothes on the right side of my closet because it’s easier for me to get to them.

I have a lot of black shirts, so that color section takes up a lot of space in my closet.

It’s up to you to decide where you think it’s best to store your non-ROYGBIV clothes.
Where Do You Hang Patterns or Stripes?
Hang patterns or stripes with the dominant color on the fabric.

If you’d normally think of a shirt as a “blue floral shirt,” hang it with your blue clothes.

The Benefits of a Color Coordinated Closet
Hanging up clothes in a color order makes everything easier to find.

Instead of rifling through your entire closet to find a specific red shirt, you can narrow your search to the red clothing area.

You’ll also notice that clothing doesn’t get lost in the mix as much as it used to.

When you intentionally use a color order, clothes won’t get shoved to the back of the closet when they aren’t worn as frequently.
Taking Closet Organization a Step Further
Once you’ve arranged your hanging clothes in a color order, you can organize your garments even further by arranging them according to type.

Put all short sleeve shirts of a certain color together, then long sleeved shirts, and then sweaters.

Arranging clothing according to type AFTER arranging them according to color makes everything even easier to find.

Achieving a Streamlined Look
Once you’ve arranged your closet according to your liking, you may want to invest in new hangers to make your closet look even more streamlined.

Matching hangers make your closet appear less cluttered because they have a consistent look.

Many professional organizers recommend velvet lined hangers, but inexpensive hangers work just as well as long as they’re a matching set.
