AD | How to Wash Merino Wool Items
Merino wool comes from Merino sheep and is a wonderful material used for both super luxurious clothing items and blankets and technical sportswear. One of the big benefits of Merino wool is that it absorbs odours caused by bacteria, which means you don’t have to wash the items as often.
Another benefit is that it has temperature regulating qualities which is why you often see base layer clothing items made with Merino wool. Great for hiking and camping adventures as Merino wool keeps you at a comfortable temperature – not hot, not cold. We had a Merino wool baby sleeping bag for my middle girl and that was great for that reason too.
You do need to look after Merino wool clothes and items properly if you want them to last, which is what we’re going to look at in this article.
- Avoid washing more than necessary.
Don’t wash your Merino wool items more than needed. Instead, hang items out to air and try brushing off first and depilling regularly. If the item is knitwear or a wool coat or suit, you can use a Cashmere Comb from Clothes Doctor for the brushing. Always brush in the same direction with gentle pressure to avoid damaging the fibres.
- If you need to wash it, be gentle.
Of course, sometimes things really do need a proper wash and when it comes to Merino wool, gentle is the way to go. You can hand wash Merino wool items at home using a gentle detergent like Clothes Doctor’s Eco Wash for Cashmere and Wool.
All you need to do is fill a basin with cold water and then add 2-3 caps of the liquid detergent. Before adding the garment, turn it inside out, then submerge in and agitate the water using your hands.
Soak for up to 30 minutes, then rinse with fresh water until the item is free from soap. Gently press the item between your hands to release most of the water, then absorb the excess with a towel. To dry a Merino wool item, lay it flat on a towel until it’s dry.
- Other Merino Wool Care Tips
You can also lightly steam clean Merino wool items such as suits and coats. Steam removes bacteria, odours and creases too so is a great way to freshen up garments.
Remember to store knitwear flat to avoid sagging and stretching and to hang up more structured and tailored clothing like suits and jackets on suitable hangers. You can use a fragrance bag or a Knitwear Mist to deter moths away from your beloved Merino wool items.
