Air Fryer Sugar Doughnuts Recipe – Such a Perfect Air Fryer Breakfast

A big, half-eaten warm sugar doughnut just out of the air fryer.

Howdy! Chef Alli Here. Let’s Get You Cookin’….Shall We?? 🙂

My Mom made these doughnuts all the time when we were kids. We were always so excited when we knew she was making them. Most of the time we ate them for breakfast, but sometimes she would make these for a snack on the weekends.

As an fyi, know that these doughnuts are fabulous little suckers while they are fresh and hot. BUT, once they cool off, not so much!

Do You Love Breakfast Recipes? We sure do.

My family loves all things BREAKFAST. And, of course, we eat breakfast for dinner quite often since those kind of meals seem to be so quick and easy.

My guys are big fans of breakfast casseroles….especially anything that is smothered in gravy. Jan’s Overnight Sausage, Egg, and Cheese Casserole comes to mind immediately, as does my Sausage, Egg and Biscuit Casserole with Cream Gravy.

For breakfasts that are smothered in syrup, the guys really like Cinnamon Roll Waffles with Crispy Bacon and Toffee and Sheet Pan French Toast Bake. Me too!

How to make Air Fryer Sugar Doughnuts in 6 Easy Steps –

  1. Place the sugar into a bowl and reserve. Open the can of biscuits, then separate them.
  2. Using your fingers, flatten each biscuit somewhat, then pull the center from each biscuit to create a hole, turning each biscuit into a doughnut.
  3. Spray the air fryer rack with nonstick spray, then place the doughnuts onto the rack. Now, brush the top of the doughnuts with a bit of oil.
  4. Air fry the doughnuts at 350 degrees F. for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown on top; turn the doughnuts over, brushing the tops with a bit of oil. Continue to air fry the doughnuts for an additional 2-3 more minutes or until golden brown on the second side.
  5. Carefully and very quickly, while they are still piping hot, remove the doughnuts from the rack, placing them one at a time, into the sugar in the bowl, flipping them over to make sure that all sides meet the sugar and are well-coated. **If the sugar doesn’t seem to want to stick very well, brush the doughnuts with a bit of oil, then dip into the sugar once again.
  6. Place the doughnuts onto a serving platter and enjoy them at once. For the best experience, doughnuts should be eaten while hot.

Common Questions Asked About This Recipe

Which tools are helpful for making Sugar Doughnuts as an Air Fryer Breakfast?

We love our air fryer and use it all the time. We have the Cuisinart TOA-60 which has a rack instead of a basket. I love being able to spread out whatever I’m cooking so that it cooks much more quickly and gets nice and crispy.

When brushing the doughnuts with oil, I use my silicone pastry brush. It’s handy and can go right into the dishwasher when I’m finished.

If you choose to fry the doughnuts instead of cooking them in the air fryer, a cast iron Dutch oven really does the trick since it’s heavy-duty. I have the 6-Quart Lodge Cast Iron Dutch Oven in red!

Can I fry the biscuits to make doughnuts if I don’t want to use the air fryer, or don’t have one?

Sure can. Use a Dutch oven or very deep skillet; add about 2-inches of vegetable oil. Over medium-high heat, get the oil hot. Add a piece of a biscuit to the hot oil; if the oil sizzles and the piece of dough begins to cook, your oil is ready.

Add the biscuits (doughnuts) to the hot oil, just a couple at a time, cooking until golden brown, approx. 2 minutes on each side. If the doughnuts are getting browned to quickly and not getting cooked at the center, turn the heat down a bit since your oil is just a little too hot.
