It can be hard enough navigating through the winter months let alone trying to do it after falling sick with a cold or flu. Whilst it seem inevitable to many, that you will land yourself a cold at some point through this period, there are ways to reduce the likelihood of picking up a cold and/or reduce the severity and duration of feeling unwell.
Here are some tips for keeping healthy through the winter period.
Nutritious Foods
Ill start with an obvious one. Make sure to consume plenty of vitamins , especially those that are high in vitamins B,C, D and E. Stick to food low in refined sugar and high in antioxidants, protein and fibre. Below are some examples of food high in these vitamins:
Vitamin B Whole Grain,s Meat, Eggs,Avocados, Bananas, Dark Leafy Greens
Vitamin C Chilli, Guava, Yellow Peppers, Blackcurrants, Kale, Broccoli, Lemon, Oranges
Vitamin D Spinach, Kale, Sardines, Egg Yolks, Cheese, Oranges, Soy Milk, Cereals
Vitamin E Sunflower Seeds, Almonds, Avocados, Spinach, Squash
Drink Plenty of Water
In summer, we are reminded to drink water because we become more easily thirsty. Many people reduce their water consumption in the winter months and because of this they neglect their bodies need for hydration.
Keeping your body well hydrated can help keep your skin healthy through changes in temperature and flush toxins out of your body
Managing Asthma
A special note to my friends out there than also suffer from asthma more severely in the colder climates.
We all love snuggling up in front of an open wood fire. If you suffer from asthma, be careful not to inhale wood smoke Wood smoke from open fires, backyard burning, fire pits and chimineas can all cause irritation which can trigger asthma. If this sounds like you, I recommend talking to your doctor about how to best manage your asthma.
